History

St Matthew's Church
The history of Weymouth Falls Anglican Church belongs to the oral tradition of the people. In putting the information into print, some "imperfections" may be present.

The church was initially a "mission church" (possibly even a mission for seafarers) in Yarmouth NS, and purhcased for the sum of $50.00 around 1906. This one story structure was transported by railway flat car to Weymouth and brought to Weymouth Falls by oxen. The trip was in two stages from Weymouth with the final miles the following spring. The narthex and vestry (about 400 sq. ft) was added in 1961.

The worshiping community itself was settled in 1783. Original family names included Langford, Cromwell, Jarvis, Pleasant, Robart, Falls, Gordon, and McNeil. Today many of these familes are still active in the church.

St. Matthews' remains the only Black Anglican Church family and the adjoining cemetery being the only Black Anglican Cemetery in the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
